Antonio I. Basilio
Mr. Antonio I. Basilio is the Resident Representative of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO). He officially assumed his post on January 4, 2005. Immediately prior to this assignment, Mr. Basilio was the Chairman of MECO, based in Manila.
A career foreign service officer, Mr. Basilio served in London, Beijing, Jeddah and Washington, D.C. (as Deputy Chief of Mission from 1992-1998). Other postings include his service as the Deputy Chairman of the APEC Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) in 1996; APEC Senior Official for the Philippines in 1997; Special Trade Representative to the Uruguay Round of Multilateral Trade Negotiations (GATT/WTO) from 1989-1990; and Chairman of the Committee on Trade and Investments of ASEAN (COTT) in 1989.
Mr. Basilio joined the private sector in 1998 as President of the Philippine Foundation for Global Concerns Inc., a non-profit organization involved in regional economic issues. In this same capacity he served as Executive Director of the Philippine National Committee of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC); Executive Director of the International Secretariat of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC); and Secretary General of the Philippine chapter of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). In 1999, he served as Chairman of the Trade Policy Forum of PECC. He was also President of Altaire Consulting and Managing Director of Romulo and Navarro, Inc., a consulting firm.
Mr. Basilio earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the Ateneo de Manila University. He took up postgraduate studies in international marketing at Brunel University (UK) and has a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University.
